Where to live in Hong Kong
District Overview
Expatriates in Hong Kong generally choose one of several popular locations, depending on whether they prefer the convenience of city living in the densely populated Midlevels, the more relaxed environment of the Southside of the island, or the Peak, which provides a cooler atmosphere and breathtaking harbour views.
Space is at such a premium that the Midlevels (areas easily accessible to the main business districts) comprise virtually 100% highrise apartment living. Building regulations restrict the height in some other areas, including the Peak and parts of the Southside where more lowrise and townhouse developments are available.
There are additional popular residential pockets in Kowloon and the New Territories, convenient for people working on that side of the harbour and, generally, better value for money in the more distant locations.
Outlying islands provide the ultimate alternative lifestyle as there are very few highrise developments and little or no road traffic. Discovery Bay on Lantau is the most populated and convenient by virtue of the regular high speed ferry service, however, there are a number of expat residents on Lamma, Cheung Chau and Peng Chau, although commuting to these islands is more restrictive.
